Abdul Lopez, 29, is the second person charged with capital murder in the case, after 26-year-old Anthony Ortiz was charged with murdering 49-year-old Daniel Guerrero in an Oakland neighborhood in September.

An eyewitness says that at the time of the attack, Lopez was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, dark shades and carrying a black and blue backpack.

On Tuesday, more arrests made in the killings. Officer Luis Rivera, 34, is charged alongside 18-year-old Alex Mones and two female co-defendants with murder for allegedly dragging Guerrero across the street, dragging and beating him, then setting him on fire.

The group was initially charged in Guerrero’s murder but those charges were reduced to manslaughter with a firearm in June.

During Monday’s press conference, Oakland police Chief Sean Whent said he could not say how many other people were involved but he did not believe the deaths were random or accidental.

“This was not some cold, calculated and intentional act of violence,” Whent said. “This violence was the result of a hate crime.”

The suspects are all members of the Latino street gang Mara Salvatrucha, whose members allegedly gang members are often targeted for killings. There is no national gang designation associated to the Mara Salvatrucha.

The Mara Salvatrucha has been implicated in a number of deaths.

Oakland police arrested Ortiz, 31, and Rivera, 34, in the first day of testimony in his trial. Both were charged in connection to the grisly murder of Guerrero.

A few days after Guerrero was found to be set on fire, Rivera was seen in photos with several other suspects.

On Monday, the FBI and local police said they believed the gang members were targeting members of the Latino street gang, which has been identified as one of several groups believed to be a significant threat to the community.
